As of this writing, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 has not yet been released. But I am writing this blog post using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 and I can tell you that it’s performing quite well.
There have been errors, probably more my fault than the program. But like all human beings, I pretty much expect miracles out of the box. To which, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 has delivered.
The product is wonderful! Being able to write my blog posts using my headset is absolutely fantastic! Dragon claims that you can increase your productivity by up to 200%. Now I’m not sure that I’m receiving anywhere near that kind of productivity level. But I will tell you this, I usually type between 40 and 50 words a minute. If I’m feeling really frisky, I may even be able to knock out 60 per minute.
With Dragon NaturallySpeaking, I’m watching the word count in my WordPress text editor and watching my computer clock at the same time. Though not entirely scientific, more specifically accurate, it appears to me that I’m putting in about 75 words per minute.
Not a huge upswing in productivity, but enough to make it worth your while, and mine too.
Stop and think about it for a minute. For me, a person who maintains 15 to 20 blogs at any given time, a 15 word per minute increase is substantial. In a days time, it could literally mean hours. Another thing I noticed when writing this post, is that it’s a little more simple to provide more content for each blog post. This post looks like it’s dialing in at about 300 words, which is about 100 more than my normal blog post.
All in all, I highly suggest Dragon NaturallySpeaking for those that work with the computer heavily. It is a timesaver and a productivity tool no web publisher should be without.

Yup Peter, Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 is on it’s way. I also use version ten, and if you have the right microphone you can make it hum. There are some improvements I’d like to see in version eleven though. I’ll try and put a list of possible improvements together later.

I’d be really interested in getting this software but I’d like to wait for Version 11 so that I don’t then have to pay upgrade costs. Do you know when it will be released and how much it will cost?
You folks who have such nice things to say about Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 must not dictate for as many hours a day as I do (8-10). I find that version 10 has SO many bugs and glitches, removed (useful) tools, inserted (pointless) tools that I found myself having to go back to version 9.5. In fact, I would say that version 10 is a botched upgrade, as was version 7, as I recall.
If there were another program on the market that worked even nearly as well as Dragon (despite its countless flaws), I would buy it in a second and consign Dragon to the scrap heap.

Hey “JP is an Ass” – perhaps you should re-read JP’s post. He didn’t make any comments about the utility of the program from a voice to text perspective, he said it was buggy and had removed useful utilities from the previous versions. Perhaps you are the ass for not being able to read?
Yikes! I think I’ll hold my tirade – one is enough. So which is a good microphone to use? And again, like the comment above, when does 11 come out? How much processor speed, RAM per type of processor / operating system, and cache would people recommend? I tried voice recognition last maybe 4 or 5 year ago, but I’d like to try it again. thanks, Chris in SoCal.
We are no closer to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11 then we were this time last year I’m afraid. There’s been nothing from Nuance, the company that makes it, and there have been no press releases on any new speech to text developments from them.
I do still like and use 10, and it works for me daily. I write about twenty different blogs now, and I couldn’t possibly keep up with everything if it weren’t for the Dragon.

I’m sorry but while i like DNS in general, and use it all the time, version 10 is for the most part a step backwards. Performance is worse and the “cut, copy, move (word)” always accidentally fires when i don’t want it to.
Insulting others because they disagree is really pathetic, criticism is what keeps products improving not undeserved or even deserved praise.

Although Nuance haven’t said anything about version 11 yet it’s very probable that it will be out this year some time between August and November because the last three versions have come out approximately two years apart and I don’t think there has ever been a longer wait than that.
I think you are probably right Rodney, we should see number eleven soon. I hope so. Every version has been an improvement on the last, so eleven may have some cool new stuff.
DNS 10 (legal) has performed much better for me than 9. Computer and headset were a constant. DNS 10 is much more accurate. I generally type short things and use DNS for longer letters and pleadings. If I am going to be doing a lot of cutting and pasting, using my fingers and hotkeys are much quicker than giving commands orally.
I actually enjoy the product now, whereas with 9, I felt like I was wrestling with it.
I still feel like I wrestle with 10 a little Andy, but overall it does the job with blog posting and long letters.
I agree with JP Piovesan. Version 10 has so many bugs it is not even funny. It renames itself often, refuses to start up equally often and the tech support is worse than useless, it is infuriating. I have used several versions over 7 years.
I wish they would publish some kind of timetable for 11. I have 9 and want to skip a version. Typically, they only offer very expensive upgrade paths, so I’m planning to wait.
I did email their support to ask about this, but never got an answer. As everyone knows: good product, lousy service. Therefore, I wait…
Well, apparently I’m an ass. That having been said, let me point out some of the bugs that I have found in version 10.
The program will often insert “no-caps” or “all-caps” (as words in the text) when using the correction window.
The program will no longer insert “1st” if I say “numeral first” (that was useful in the older versions).
If I use the Canadian / British word “cheque” (you know, for money) and then say “capitalise that”, it will change it to “Check”.
If I remove certain words from the vocabulary (such as traveler), it will put them back after two or three days (in Canada / Britain, we spell it traveller). Same thing with colour, etc. Of course, going through the properties of the specific word will indeed allow you to select an alternative spelling, but if you have to correct it / capitalise it or anything else, it reverts to the US spelling.
If I say “this is a general problem”, it will often (but not always) write “this is a Gen. problem”.
About 50% of the time, when I say “correct that”, all of the words in the correction window will have capital letters, even though the word that I’m correcting did not.
I could go on, but what’s the point… apparently I’m an ass. The fact that I have been in touch with the technical support people at DNS countless times over the years, have sent them countless logs of the corrections, and have told them that I would be more than happy to HELP them to improve the program, given the fact that I dictate between 6000 and 10,000 words a day, I have never had any response.
Just for additional information, I have a dual core processor computer, Windows 7, lots of RAM, and I use the microphone that came with the program. It isn’t surprising that the idiot who so charmingly insulted me didn’t leave a name… stupid, misogynistic and anonymous apparently go hand-in-hand.

Whoa. I can understand you being upset; there is no call for taking people’s dignity away just because you have a difference of opinion. I hope that I can have a civil discourse with you. For me, 10 is a vast improvement over 9. I have the legal edition of both. For each version, I had the same computer equipment, and microphone, which is the USB Parrott VXI. It is superior to the headset that comes with the software, because it has it’s own soundcard processor. I would highly recommend getting a better headset.
Consequently, the only variable was the software, and Version 9 just wasn’t very accurate for me. Version 10 is quite accurate, without the need to train words endlessly. Version 10 does have quirks. For instance, sometimes, but not always, when I use the caps lock key, it will come out lowercase anyway. I have never been able to make an “s” print when I say, “press s”; it always comes out as an “x”. Nevertheless, I enjoy using Version 10, when I use it (Sometimes I prefer to type, sometimes I prefer to dictate). I could not say the same thing about Version 9.
I also find that when DNS starts getting quirky, it is time to reboot. I think going into standby mode overnightg and keeping the computer on for days on end without rebooting makes it quirky. Maybe I’m just imagining it, but it seems to work.
I’m just curious to what you do JP that you dictate ten thousand words a day. Sounds interesting.
Hello Mr. Fox, I have no problems having a civil discussion with anyone, but I’m not the one who started off with insults, it was the anonymous person who called me an ass. I’m assuming that that wasn’t you, and I noticed that you identified yourself quite normally in some of your earlier posts and didn’t seem at all insulting to anyone.
I’ve used several different microphones (including a USB microphone), and find that that – unfortunately – isn’t the issue. The big problem for me is the bugs.
If you say “press s”, it will most often NOT print a “s” for you, but if you say “press sierra” or “press uppercase sierra”, then it will.
I agree that the accuracy is good, again, that isn’t the issue. Putting in extra spaces where it shouldn’t, changing the spelling of words despite changes that I’ve made in the priorities, having corrections in the correction box that all have capital letters when the word that I’m correcting didn’t, inserting (as words in the text) “all-caps” or “no-caps” or “cap” when using the correction box, and working quite poorly in MS Word (despite having re-installed various times), those are SOME of the things that bother me. In earlier versions, you could say “21″ and then say “format that spelled out” and it would change it to “twenty-one” (or vice versa if you said “format that number”), and this is yet another feature that has been removed. Or if I say “this is a major drag” and it writes out “this is a Maj. drag”, things like that are what drive me nuts.
Personally, I (almost) never put my computer on standby. Windows 7 starts up and shuts down pretty quickly (much more quickly than earlier versions of Windows), so I always just shut it off when I need to. You’re right, however, that rebooting sometimes helps.
Another big problem is that, every few days, when I try to exit the program or even just to save the user files, I get an error box that opens saying something like “Can’t save because the file xxx (can’t remember which one) already exists”, and then I can’t exist without ctrl-alt-del. This happens every 3-4 days, meaning constantly having to restore and back up user files… very annoying.
Mr. Crawford, I’m a translator, and 6000-10000 words translated is about a normal day’s work. It isn’t all that interesting, lots of banking, business and IT stuff.
I’ve been using DNS (preferred) since 2000, in its various versions, and have found that some “upgrades” have been anything but, instead introducing new problems. Though I’ve called customer service countless times over the years, I’ve found them to be infinitely less than helpful.
That has been my experience, anyway.
I do not use any save capability for DNS. I save my docs frequently while creating, whether typing or dictating, and saw no need for it. DNS was really getting on my nerves with the delay between dictation and print, which was a result of the dictation-save feature. Now there is little or no delay. Maybe with your particular occupation, you need the save feature.
I do get some strange error message sometimes when I close out DNS. I think it has something to do with closing Word first. I just click cancel (I think), then manually close DNS a second time and it closes ok.

Now, this also might be a real indicator that lucky legs 11 is on the way. I know in recent years when the heavy discounts from major online retailers start, it can be the red flag that the new version is coming.
I have no evidence other than my own hunch on this, so if anyone out there can back me up or shoot me down here, it’s much appreciated.

I was in Staples today and DNS10 basic was on sale for $49.99 from 99.99 and there was a detachable mfg coupon on the box to save $50 if you own a previous version — that would make it free. I’d say good evidence that v11 is around the corner.

Yeaaaaah!
Here’s what I could pull out of him -
They cannot give an exact date for launch, because they don’t know for sure. They are calling it the third or fourth week of August.
But the customer service guy (I’ll hold his name back, just in case he might get into trouble for talking to me) told me some of the highlights of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11:
New, easier to use, user interface
Between 20% and 50% more accurate word recognition
And that was it. He stopped there and told me that they hadn’t been briefed any further than that. I thanked him for being a good sport and told him about our blog here and how much we all are anticipating this release.
So there you have it. I have officially verified that version 11 of Dragon Naturally Speaking is on it’s way to you and on it’s way to store shelves.

I have also recently spoken with someone from Nuance customer service this afternoon, in fact at about 6 PM Eastern, and he tell me that it was still a “beta” version, not available to the public in any timeframe of which he was aware. He also told me that he would send me a link to the Windows 7 update for DNS 10, which I have yet to receive.
I’m really hoping that version 11 will have corrected some of the bugs that exist in version 10. I’ve been using this program for 10 years, and have seen all kinds of ups and downs, good updates and botched updates… I really hope that this will be a good one!
We must have gotten different offices or at least different support guys. I also spoke with them at almost the same moment you did (5:55 pm EST) from someone in the Western Sales Office, which is where I got all this information. I did write down the guys name, but I don’t want to get him in trouble if he wasn’t supposed to give me the details he gave me.
I can tell you that what I wrote was exactly what he told me. So I’m going to be looking for DNS 11 come the end of August. I’ve got enough Bestbuy points that it should cover the new version for free!

I’m in the process of ordering it now, and despite their claims, it still isn’t shipping for at least 2-3 weeks.
However, by going through Customer service and buying an upgrade, I did get a better price than is shown on the website ! $99 instead of $149 (as I recall).
So far so good !
But that’s what I said in my post yesterday JP. That the guy at customer service said it would be two or three weeks.
In the email they sent me, they gave me the same price for preorder / upgrades. Did you get that email too?

Don’t know about the microphone, but I was told that there is NO download version available, nor planned !
I’ve had to order a physical CD (with a US address, since it won’t get up here to the Great White North for months, possibly decades)… I wonder if there will ever be a French version…
Did you know that if you buy DNS in France (or Germany, Italy, etc.), it automatically comes with the program for French (German, Italian, etc.) AND English…? I wish that we could get that here… that would be super useful… at least for me.

JP–Gen., Maj., and Rep. and stuff like that are indeed (in my opinion) a program flaw in the probability modules that decide which version of a word it will pick when you speak it. Just go into your vocab editor and delete General, Major, Representative, etc. The lowercase improper nouns will still be there. The reason it picks these often first is because the program comes with the properties of these words already set to Use Alternate Written Form (Gen., Maj., Rep.). I knew about some of the things you mentioned, but many of them were new to me and VERY helpful!

Thank you for that suggestion, Erica, but unfortunately, my experience has been that, like the American spelling of various words that I have attempted to take out (color, traveler, maneuver, etc.) by deleting them from the vocabulary, bizarrely, they reappear after a few days! Seriously, they reappear… in any event, I personally have been using this program for going on 10 years now, so I have seen all kinds of things come and go, and could probably offer training in it myself, though that isn’t my business in the slightest… I’m just a translator!
Anyway, the offer of technical support may well come in handy, thank you very much!
Hopefully, the new version will get rid of some of these bugs.
Version 11 is here! I received my copy yesterday and, needless to say, installed it right away. I have to say that, so far, things are looking awfully good. The ridiculous glitch with the all-caps, no-caps and so on seems to have disappeared, and the “correction window” seems to be working more appropriately, i.e. NOT capitalising everything in the list.
The program also seems to be quite quick and pretty darn accurate, and everything seems to work all right when running Windows 7.
So far, so good, I must say!

So far, everything seems to be working quite well, though I have noticed one little glitch… In truth, however, I’m not sure if it’s a little glitch or that I’m doing something wrong! I’ll have to monitor it a bit more closely. Otherwise… I think that we’re in good shape!
Can you clue us in? What is it doing?
Okay, here goes… For the way that I do my translations, everything is in a two-column table, one with the original text, and one with my translation.
With the following text “L’avis N° 2004-15 du CNC relatif au traitement des charges différées ou à étaler est appliqué depuis le 1er janvier 2005″ copied into the translation box, I used the mouse to select “L’avis” (only) and dictated “CNC opinion” at which point the entire sentence in the translation box disappeared, leaving only the words “CNC opinion”.
Second occurrence (using the same “set-up” as above for the sake of simplicity), as soon as I said “all caps on…”, the letter C (or sometimes Z or M or S) appeared at the end of the sentence.
These are the only issues that I have noticed so far. Otherwise, the recognition time is very quick and the accuracy seems to be quite a bit better. Also, the problems with the correction window (i.e. capital letters everywhere) has been fixed.

In the text, it says s.a.s.
I select s.a.s. and say “all caps that” and it produces S POINT S POINT S POINT.
Brilliant…
The text says “l’homme”, I select it and say “all caps that” and it produces L’ HOMME (space between the apostrophe and the word).
One DEFINITE improvement… If you’ve dictated an entire sentence that, for example, contains the word “book” three times (for whatever reason) and you want to correct one of the occurrences of “book” (let’s say it should have been “booked”), when you say “correct book”, instead of automatically selecting the LAST occurrence of the word “book”, a little number will appear just above EACH occurrence of the word “book”, and then you say “choose one” (or whatever) and the correction box opens. That is a definitely cool feature, and a good move.
I just got a call from Nuance to offer me a special deal for updating. Because I hadn’t already ordered I went ahead and took it. Should be here Monday.

I have been trying to order the upgrade at $99 as listed in the ‘banner’ but it goes in as $199 and I don’t see a code or anything. I emailed Nuance and got a reply saying that thus wasn’t something the online store could help with. Really? Can any of you tell me what I need to do to order the upgrade at the promo price? Unfortunately, my only suggestion would be to ring them up and tell them that you are unable to take advantage of the discounted price.

I got mine today. Loading it right now!
Going to write some notes as I install and use this thing. First impression walk thru if you will.
On install it asks to delete previous versions of Dragon if detected, but says it keeps the old profiles. Still installing, so we shall see.
Immediately asks for serial number. You can enter the Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 serial number in upper or lower case and it will accept it.
Seriously taking a long time to install. Not sure if this is the program, or this particular computer, which is a laptop that is a little older. Running Windows Vista. (I plan to give it a go with my Windows 7 Asus Notebook a bit later)
On opening, it tells me that I have to activate the product, and do I want to activate it now, or later? I chose later to see what happened and it told me I could use it five times before activation will be required. I may not want to use it on this machine ultimately, and I don’t know if it’s going to only license to one machine or not. (maybe somebody here can enlighten me… JP???)
Now it is telling me that my user profile has to be updated and that this process will take between 12 and 24 minutes. (I find the lack of round numbers odd)
Guessing it would take a lot longer if you had a ton of different user profiles. (BTW, installing it on the Asus while this updates and it’s going a lot faster, gotta guess it’s the better processor speed and more ram). Still a little slow though.
OK. done. Definitely took longer than it said, like 25 minutes.
On the old system it gave me a warning that says-
After analyzing your computer’s processor and memory resources, Natural language commands for the following applications were disabled to optimize performance:
Microsoft Word
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Powerpoint
Corel Wordperfect
-guessing the old box is not going to be the primary for this software….
Now, I did a little preliminary testing, and for me, it looks really promising. I did a few paragraphs of text and it hit it at 100%, without errors. Impressive.
I’m going to end my little mini novel here and do some testing. I’ll post more later when I have more feedback.
